Orca's in Hood Canal

We spent this weekend at Hood Canal with the family. The weather was much better than a typical Memorial Day weekend and the water was quite warm with the negative 3.7 tide and 90 degree weather last week.

Monday as we were driving around in the boat we came across a pod of Orca Whales (a total of 6) near Alderbrook on Hood Canal, WA. What an impressive mammal!! We stumbled on them as we were showing a friend the view from the water. Upon our return to the house the rest of the family took the boat out and went looking for them. It was about a hour later and they had moved up just past the Twanoh State Park. From the report the Orca's were putting on quite the show; jumping in the air to show their white belly, doing "head stands" while flipping their tale in the air. Needless to say it was very impressive.

From reading in the Seattle Times, it sounds like each adult Orca will eat one seal per day. These orca's are called Transient Whales and are usually only in a area for a few weeks, however these have been here since January. At one seal per day they are putting quite a nice dent in the seal population. Go figure that there were 10 seals on the float out in front of the house on Sunday morning, and didn't get off the float until after 10 am when I put the kayak in the water do go for a stroll.

Alayne and Tia went to Montana for a week to celebrate her Grandma's 85th birthday. Here are some pictures...
